Josef Eisinger
Dr. Josef Eisinger was born in Vienna in 1924 and left Vienna on a Kindertransport to London.
We met Josef in lower Manhattan, NYC, in September of 2017, when we arrived in the New York area to film a series of interviews. Several of the children saved by Truus Wijsmuller eventually ended up in this part of the world after the liberation of Europe in 1945.
Josef received us in his lovely home, almost reminiscent of an old European house in style: lots of wooden stairs and floors, books all over the place and a warm welcome.
It became almost instantly clear that this vibrant 90+ years old had not let anything – not even the awful and disheartening events of WW2 – take away his friendly and open personality. If anything, we learned during the interview that here was a man who not only had a successful career in physics, but more importantly had taken all the negative moments and turned them into something positive that he could take away from it for the rest of his still young life. “Concentrate on the good things you find here because you'll never get rid of all the bad things in this world,” he told is.
It is only one of the lessons that can be learned from listening to his inspiring story.
Glimpses: A Sundry Life was published beginning 2024 and includes some of Eisinger's artwork. His earlier memoir, Flight and Refuge. Reminiscences of a Motley Youth includes stories about how he and his parents escaped the Nazis.
